RAA1: Resilient African Architecture Seminar

About this seminar

This seminar introduces the concept of Resilience and its implications for Architecture. It includes frameworks and approaches that can be used to integrate resilience into buildings and construction. The Seminar will be based on presentations from architects from different regions of Africa and a panel and audience discussion.

What this seminar offers

Resilient architecture envisages future events and change and addresses this to avoid or reduce disruptive or harmful impacts. Increasingly, events such as floods, drought and very hot days are occurring as a result of climate change. Architects can work with data and specialists to understand these types of future events and design into buildings characteristics and systems which enable these to be more easily accommodated.

Proactively accommodating these events and changes enable organisations such as business and schools to continue their work and negative and disruptive impacts on the economy and education are avoided. This seminar provides valuable insights into designing for resilience that Architects can apply in their work.

Structure of the Seminars

The Seminar will include the following areas:

1. Designing for Resilience

This presentation will address: What is resilience? Resilience to what, and for what? Are there concepts and tools that can be used for design for resilience?
