What this course offers

The course will introduce you to the structure and content of research writing for publication. It will provide practical opportunities for participants to practice and apply learning as part of the training.

What you will learn

The course covers the following topics.

1. Why write?

Writing provides a way of sharing your research and ideas. It ensures your work can have an impact and make a difference. Publishing your work ensures your work can be recognised and supports academic and career progression.

2. Generating ideas

Research by its nature is about generating ideas and new approaches. Writing can be used to help stimulate, develop and share these ideas.

3. Writing simply

Many of the best scientists and researchers write very simply. For research to have an impact it must be accessible and understandable. This requires thinking through how concepts can be shared and expressing this clearly and simply.

4. Structure

Research writing follows established structures. This enables readers to effectively engage with the work and understand and critically review this.

5. Editing

Editing and the process of rereading and rewriting are used to improve writing. Mistakes are picked up and the flow and clarity of arguments are improved.

5. Submitting articles

Selecting publication routes and submitting articles should be considered at the outset of writing articles. Understanding the publication’s publishing requirements and readership helps ensure a smooth publication process.

5. Developing writing habits

Writing for research publications may seem complicated. However, with practice, it gets easier and better. Writing and research habits can be used to practice writing better and improve productivity
